Coming Soon to The Belgard — Sweet Science Coffee

The Belgard offers an elevated lifestyle for its residents — and soon, it will offer an elevated coffee experience as well. A local District favorite, Sweet Science Coffee, is opening its first stand-alone location at The Belgard this spring.

Called the best coffee shop in D.C. by The Washington Post, Sweet Science brings a European-style coffee bar to the NoMa neighborhood. This specialty coffee shop was founded by Sandra Wolter, a former television reporter and journalist from Germany whose family has worked in the coffee industry for four generations.

The name, a reference to boxing’s nickname as the “sweet science of bruising,” describes Wolter’s dedication to her craft — she says that running Sweet Science, like boxing, takes a combination of trained skill, gut instinct, adaptability and endurance. “If you want to be a great barista and entrepreneur, you have to do the work and trust the process…except we deliver our punches by means of caffeine!”

Wolter’s mantra, HCOC, stands for Human Contact Over Coffee. To her, it’s all about the personal experience of time spent together when enjoying a cup of coffee. Sweet Science brings this personal touch when serving each of its patrons. It offers a range of beverage experiences to suit each individual, whether you’re in the mood to slow down and savor the moment (try their “Slowbar,” featuring individually crafted, specialty beverages) or are in more of a hurry on your way to work (they offer a variety of seasonal drip coffees for you to grab as you swing through).

This local coffee shop is also dedicated to offering only the highest quality, responsibly sourced beans. You can sample coffees from roasters as close as within the DMV to as far as Berlin, and your barista will always be able to tell you exactly where a specific coffee was sourced.

Not much of a coffee drinker? Sweet Science also carries a large selection of locally and single-sourced teas, as well as a range of pastries and food items. Breakfast items include pastries, sweet and savory oatmeal, European-inspired desserts and a self-serve biscuit bar. Sandwiches, salads and soups are available for lunch, and in the evenings, you can enjoy a glass from their curated wine list as you sample their small plates (vegetarian and vegan options available).

Sweet Science is bringing a gourmet coffee shop experience that perfectly complements life at The Belgard. Stay tuned for their grand opening, and keep on the lookout for exclusive perks for Belgard residents!
