6 Wonderful Winter Activities in D.C.

It’s the holiday season, and living at The Belgard positions you perfectly to enjoy the winter wonderland of activities that the District has to offer. Discover our collection of six favorite events and activities to experience this season.

Zoolights at the National Zoo

Through the beginning of January, the Smithsonian National Zoo transforms nightly into a dazzling spectacle of bright lights and holiday delights. Zoolights, a District tradition and a free event, includes laser light shows, live music performances, and tasty treats. Enjoy a cup of mulled wine to keep you warm as you walk through the exhibits, and peek the usually snoozing nocturnal animals in their element!

Holiday Markets Around D.C.

Still haven’t started on your gift shopping? There are plenty of holiday markets and retail pop-ups throughout the District this time of year, perfect to pick up gifts for everyone on your list. Appointed is hosting a holiday makers market in its Ivy City location on December 15. Penn Quarter’s Downtown Holiday Market is celebrating its fourteenth year and is open daily through December 23. Just outside D.C., Alexandria’s Del Rey Artisans Holiday Market is open weekends through December 16. Don’t worry — we won’t tell if you pick up a few things for yourself while you’re out.

ICE! at Gaylord Resort

Enjoy Christmas on the Potomac at Gaylord National Resort for a fun-filled day full of wintry activities. This year’s ICE! theme is A Charlie Brown Christmas and includes a walk-through winter wonderland carved from over two million pounds of ice and with more than 40 hand-carved sculptures and four ice slides. Bundle up — it’s a chilly nine degrees inside the ICE! exhibit.

Georgetown GLOW

In D.C.’s historic and oldest neighborhood, Georgetown GLOW brings a curated exhibition of ten outdoor light art installations that will fill you with awe and wonder. This year’s event brings 16 artists with exhibits that span from the Key Bridge to K Street and up Wisconsin Avenue. With a number of walking tours of the installations available, including a boozy holiday drinks tour that stops at local restaurants along the way, and maps highlighting the locations for a do-it-yourself tour, there are plenty of opportunities to experience this brilliant annual event.

Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery

Remember and honor those who defined the value of freedom with the annual Wreaths Across America laying of wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. The wreath laying event takes place on the morning of Saturday, December 15, at 9 a.m. Volunteers are welcome. If you are unable to attend but still want to participate, you can sponsor a wreath as well.
